Listening to My Inner Voice
One of the fascinating things about life in Bali is the unexpected blend of people, cultures, and experiences that find their way into your life. Tonight, I had one of those magical Bali moments, a date that turned into a lesson in self-respect and trusting my instincts.
The Bumble Connection
It all started when Maga, a stunning 31-year-old from Cape Town, connected with me on Bumble.
His profile showed a slim guy with short, rasta curls and lips that could make anyone swoon.
He texted me late one night, saying he was nearby and wanted to swing by just to say hi. It was 11 p.m., and I immediately told him it wasn’t possible, I have boundaries, especially with my daughter living at home.
But Maga was persistent, and eventually, I agreed to meet him at the end of my gang (alley).
He stepped out of the car, hugged me, kissed me, and said, “I don’t want you to look for another guy ever again; I want to make you happy.”
I smiled, but internally, I rolled my eyes. Beautiful words mean nothing without actions to back them up.
We had fun that night, but I stayed cautious.
Setting Expectations
The next day, Maga’s charm was in full force. He texted, video-called, and even introduced me to his friends.
He eagerly agreed to join me when I told him about the Comedy Lab I wanted to attend. I explained that I needed to be there by 5:45 p.m. and stressed the importance of punctuality. He promised multiple times to pick me up at 5:30.
But of course, he was late.
By the time he arrived at 6:15, I had already missed the start of the show. I told myself to stay calm and go with the flow.
Bali has a way of teaching patience, sometimes in the most frustrating ways.
Changing Plans
On the way, Maga mentioned needing to stop by his brother’s house to pick up some money and buy electricity. He suggested to drop me off at the Comedy Lab first.
I told him I would go with him because I wouldn’t want to walk into the Comedy Lab an hour late by myself. The thought of being roasted by the comedians was enough to make me change course.
After his errand, Maga suggested skipping the Comedy Lab entirely and heading to his villa in Ubud instead, 45 minutes away from my house.
My inner voice screamed, No way.
I suggested stopping for drinks instead. We were close to the Tropical Nomad, a cozy place I love for its serene atmosphere and coffee-only menu. So that is where we went.
Maga, disappointed at the lack of alcohol, sulked as we sat in one of the romantic outdoor cabins.
Despite the setting, I knew the date was over for me.
Listening to My Inner Voice
I calmly told Maga to enjoy his coffee and cookie, and then I would call a GoCar to take me home.
He protested, making excuses for his tardiness and insisting he wanted to take care of me, and make me happy.
But I stood firm. “You can make me happy by leaving,” I said.
While waiting for my ride, Maga continued to plead with me, even driving up beside me one last time to offer to take me home. I declined and climbed into the GoCar, feeling immense relief and empowerment.
Reflections on the Date
As my driver and I chatted about the night, I laughed at the absurdity of it all.
Maga had shown me exactly who he was, unreliable, self-centered, and far from the partner I’m seeking. While he was gorgeous and charming, I knew I deserved someone who respected my time, boundaries, and values.
For a moment, I reflected on how far I’ve come. Years ago, I might have ignored my inner voice and gone along with the evening, feeling regretful and resentful later. But tonight, I chose differently. I trusted my instincts, prioritized my well-being, and walked away without guilt, regret, or shame.
Life in Bali: Lessons Learned
Living in Bali offers endless opportunities to meet fascinating people and experience unique moments.
But it also teaches you to listen to your inner voice, set boundaries, and recognize what truly serves your happiness.
This date reminded me of the importance of self-respect and the power of saying no.
Bali has a way of bringing clarity, even in the most unexpected situations. And tonight, that clarity came in the form of a lesson I’ll carry with me:
trust yourself and never settle for less than you deserve.
